    On 19 November, Mark Harper MP, Conservative member for the Forest of Dean, outlined the Opposition’s key objections to the Single Equality Bill, the aim of which is to harmonise and strengthen equality legislation in the UK.

    Mr Harper said “his party feels the proposed clause on Positive Action ‘may be used to employ less able workers”.

    From 1st October 2009, HEAR, London's pan-equality third sector network, will no longer be hosted by Race on the Agenda (ROTA).

    Despite HEAR's increased reputation and impact, the network has been unable to secure long term funding. Dr. Theo Gavrielides, ROTA's Chief Executive said: "We are very sorry to no longer host HEAR. It was a very difficult decision for the Board. Last year, ROTA subsidised HEAR, but this year we were left with no other option, but to discontinue the network".

    On 30th June 09, Race on the Agenda and MiNet launched a report detailing the impact of the recession on Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities and their sector. The launch took place at an event where London Councils and Government Office for London attended as keynote speakers. The project was funded by CapacityBuilders, Office of the Third Sector, Big Lottery Fund and NAVCA.

    Race on the Agenda (ROTA) with the support of Voice4Change England have formed the 'Winning the Race' coalition who are backing the call for a meeting with Harriet Harman MP in regards to the single equality bill. The coalition are concerned that key areas that will affect Britain's minority communities will not be addressed in the legislation and are calling upon the Minister to take a lead on ensuring that the legislation is fit for purpose.
