Issue 81: March 2025

Dear Members, Partners, and Supporters,

Welcome to the latest edition of the ROTA newsletter.

It was a privilege to join ROTA as CEO last month. It is an organisation with a rich history, important legacy and exciting future. There is real power in our membership model and we look forward to working with you in sharing ideas, knowledge and strategies for lasting racial justice in Britain.

As you can see below, we are scaling up our work in important areas, particularly in housing justice. As our previous research has starkly shown; racial inequality is hard-wired into the housing system. It will require a collaborative and coordinated effort to address this. Therefore please do join and partner with us in the movement for change to influence legislation such as the Renters Rights Bill. We are also supporting the next generation of Black and Global Majority researchers, through our ROTA Community Research Partnership (RCRP). Our successful event last month addressed critical issues in education and employment while launching a rich, intricate and moving report from our community researchers.

It has been such a fantastic first few weeks here at ROTA. Again, we look forward to working with you for a better future.

Matthew Johnson, ROTA Chief Executive

ROTA Community Research Partnership Report 2024 launched

On the 30th January 2025, ROTA was immensely proud to launch, at a well-attended event, our first report emanating from the work of our Peer Researchers who had been conducting innovative research around the themes of education and employment and how racial inequities affect their communities in these areas.

The ROTA Community Research Partnership (RCRP) is the flagship new partnership initiative from Race On the Agenda (ROTA). This three year project has been enabled through funding from City Bridge Foundation via Propel. During the life of this project, ROTA will recruit, train and support the independent peer researchers to conduct race equity research within their communities focusing on different themes for each of the three annual cohorts.

News on the Renters Rights Bill
The Renters Rights Bill is progressing through Parliament, having had its second reading in the House of Lords and is due to go to Committee Stage later in March.

The Bill as it stands does not reflect ROTA's concerns that race discrimination in housing has been fully addressed.

We have made representations to relevant Parliamentarians who are debating the Bill and  we are engaged in further correspondence with them. We urge that our views on how the Bill can be improved are taken into account. People from Black and Global Majority and Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities experience disproportionately higher levels of homelessness, housing insecurity and inadequate accommodation than White people. Racism within the housing system is a contributory factor.
