Dear

Why am I writing to you?

I am writing to you from the Winning the Race Coalition to express strong support for an important amendment (set out below) that is due to be considered during the Equality Bill’s report stage.

We support the amendment, and hope that you will as well, because the amendment:

§  makes it clear to public bodies, and those exercising public functions, that they must act and take proportionate steps towards the achievement of equality of opportunity in giving due regard to their public sector equality duty;

§  is a sensible and reasonable approach;

§  would apply equally to England, Scotland and Wales;

§  is in line with the cross party support expressed for the public sector equality duty and cross party calls for clarity about the implementation of the duty.

Who else supports the amendment?

We understand that this amendment is supported by the Equality and Human Rights Commission and by a range of organisations including Citizens Advice, the Discrimination Law Association, the Disability Charities Consortium, the Equality and Diversity Forum,  the Equality Bill Alliance, Equanomics UK, the 1990 Trust, ROTA, Unison and Winning the Race Coalition.
