Welcome to issue 73 of ROTA's Policy E-Newsletter It’s been another huge month for race equality in Britain. After an 8 month wait, the Government-Commissioned Report into Racial Disparity was finally published. As with every report, the spin is more important than the detail and the spin on this latest report left many dismayed as it was claimed the report couldn’t find any evidence of systemic racism in Britain. It went further and claimed that Britain should be a model of diversity and inclusion for other white majority nations. The Report should have been a roadmap to a fair Britain but instead ignored decades of evidence and belittled the lived experiences of many. ROTA and many other anti-racist organisations rejected the report and strongly opposed its stated findings, which if accepted could take the fight for race equality back decades as we are forced to relitigate arguments which were decided years ago. Despite the opposition to the Report, the Government threw its weight behind the findings and instead of addressing the many issues that were raised, decided to attack the Runnymede Trust, one of the Report’s most vocal critics. After a number of MPs criticised Runnymede from the floor of the Commons, a group of up to 20 Tory MPs complained to the Charity Commission that the Trust was acting in a partisan way. ROTA would like to state clearly, it is the job of the anti-racist voluntary sector to hold the Government to account and point out where it is harming our communities. No organisation should be attacked for doing its job. |
