Welcome to issue 72 of ROTA's Policy E-Newsletter As we still wait for the Government’s delayed report into racial disparities in the UK, we are presented with more evidence that inequality is very much alive and well in Britain and is more likely to rise than fall in the coming years. A young couple made a lot of waves with the incredibly unsurprising revelation that there are some racist views at the very top of British society. The Chancellor unveiled his budget but then came in for immediate criticism for recommending that health workers should only get a 1% pay rise. This is less than the 2.1% they were promised and way below the 15% that some nursing unions are calling for. Our CEO Maurice Mcleod joined Clive Lewis MP, Cat Smith MP and Runnymede’s Halima Begum for an All Party Parliamentary Group look at the Government’s plans to introduce Voter IDs for British elections. This will have a chilling impact on political engagement by minority communities as it will put another barrier up for those who already feel powerless in our political system. As the Covid-19 vaccine roll out continues, we’re proud to join with the other members of the Coalition of Race Equality Organisations (CORE) to put on a national webinar to help our communities get the information they need in order to make an informed decision about vaccinations. |
