Welcome to issue 65 Policy E-Newsletter. This edition is packed with information about what is happening around the sector in relation to race equality.

CORE Development Officer vacancy

We are currently seeking an exceptional individual to take on the role of CORE Development Officer.

Salary Grade: £10,425 (£26,063 pro rata)

Terms: Part-Time, 2yrs

The Coalition for Race Equality brings together many of the UK's leading black and minority ethnic voluntary and community organisations for the promotion of race equality. The Secretariat for the Coalition for Race Equality will be provided by a partnership between Race on the Agenda (ROTA) and Voice4Change England (V4CE) with ROTA as the lead partner, the employer and the financially accountable body. The two organisations have close ties and significant experience of coordinating and servicing networks of BAME organisations to campaign on race equality issues.

Overarching Responsibilities will include:

Convening and facilitating meetings of CORE members and partner organisations to respond to local, regional or national issues and opportunities in raising issues of importance to BAME organisations and the people they represent.
Working with organisations across the UK to create campaigns and messages to shift public perceptions around race and racism
Gather, synthesise, summarise and share intelligence on relevant issues as decided by CORE members
Develop briefings and responses to consultations in relation to key government policy and relevant development in the sector

Closing Date: The closing date for applications is 12 noon, Monday 25th November 2019 (by post or email). Successful candidates will be notified by Thursday 28th November 2019 to attend an interview, likely to be on 3rd December 2019. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

Welcome to Saqib Deshmukh - Interim Development Officer

The Coalition of Race Equality (CORE) welcomes Saqib Deshmukh as the new Interim Development Officer

He will be working till the end of the year to provide support to the CORE secretariat, and reviewing its membership and current initiatives, in particular in the run up to the General Election.

Avocado+ Funders Den 2019 hailed as a great success

This year, the Avocado+ event was held in the prestigious surroundings of London’s Living Room at City Hall on 4th October 2019.

The idea of the event was for six small Black, Asian, Minority-ethnic and Refugee (BAMER) charity and voluntary organisations to pitch their business ideas to the representatives of funding bodies assembled on the night – in a similar style to the BBC TV programme the Dragon’ Den. The organisation with the presentation that appealed to the panel of funders the most, would be awarded a package of assistance.

Tackling Informal Exclusions confenerence and AGM 18/19

Race on the Agenda hereby gives notice to its members that our Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the financial year 2018/19 is scheduled to take place on Monday 20th January 2020 at Resource for London, 356 Holloway Road, London N7 6PA.

CREME Project update: First Media Training Workshop

The first CREME Media Training Workshop took place at Resource for London building on 29th October. It was attended by representatives from 10 different London-based charity and voluntary organisations.

The CREME project began in July 2019 in order to raise the profile and increase the capacity of such organisations working in the field of race-equality.

Former journalist and public relations operative Lee Pinkerton took up the role of the CREME project officer this summer. In this capacity he supports the media communications of ROTA as well as the Black Training and Enterprise Group and The Runnymede Trust. But as part of his brief he is also supposed to promote the work of the many other smaller organisations in the sector.

Lee said, “There are approximately 200 such organisations working in London. While it is not possible for me to work with all of them individually, I can reach many of them through this kind of training. These workshops allow me to pass on the media skills I have built up over the last 20 years, and help these organisations to promote their work more effectively.”

The next media training workshop is planned for January and will be tackling the subject of social media.

London Plus Conference - Civil Society: What Next for London?

Civil Society: What Next for London? Our Message to the Next Mayor of London.

London is the most diverse and vibrant city in the world, with a civil society to match. London Plus champions London’s civil society through insight, influence and powerful connections. Central to this is our message that the work of civil society must be accessible, inclusive, responds to the needs of Londoners and contributes to tackling inequalities.

This conference will bring together a wide range of civil society organisations, and those supporting and enabling civil society actions through funding, CSR and volunteering, to identify priorities for a civil society manifesto for the London Mayoral elections in May 2020.

Are you registered to vote?

A General Election has been called for 12 December 2019, Islington Refugee and Migrant Forum would like to see more migrants and BAME groups to engage with the upcoming election, and to mobilise communities to register and to vote. If you are planning to vote in December’s general election you must be registered to vote by Thursday 26th November.

Many people in our communities struggle to participate due to language barriers and a lack of familiarity with the democratic processes we, therefore, need to assist our communities to take part and we only have until the 26th November to register everyone in our communities to vote.

Sign the Alliance for Inclusive Education (ALLFIE) manifesto

ALLFIE’s manifesto focuses on realising the rights of ALL disabled people to mainstream education with all necessary supports and adjustments within an inclusive education system. It sets out ALLFIE’s six demands, which would move us from the present situation to a fully inclusive education system.

We believe disabled people have the right to:

An inclusive education supported by human rights laws.
A coordinated education, health and social care system.
Fully accessible buildings.
An inclusive curriculum.
An inclusive assessment system.
An education workforce committed to inclusive education practice.

Don’t shut Disabled people out of mainstream education

Sign the Alliance for Inclusive Education (ALLFIE) campaig to Gavin Williamson, Education Minister and Sajid Javid , Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Increase funding for inclusive education so all children and young people can be educated together as equals in their local communities.

Why is this important?
