How can London's diverse population be better represented in volunteering? London Plus is partnering with the HEAR Network and ROTA to invite you to an event which aims to stimulate a discussion on why there are issues currently in recruiting a diverse range of volunteers, and what needs to change? We will look at projects across the City that successfully involve a diverse range of volunteers and use these examples to see what can be used as shared learning. Background to the event · Around 2 million people are estimated to have volunteered in the last 12 months in London. However, recent data shows a lack of diversity among people formally volunteering with charities, with an NCVO 2018 report indicating that those formally participating with charities are predominantly "people from well-resourced and highly educated backgrounds"; · Is this the whole picture for London? We know from our work with CVSs and Volunteer Centres across London that some organisations and boroughs have a highly diverse volunteer programme – however we have also heard from civil society infrastructure organisations that they struggle to increase the diversity of their volunteers; · How should we address this? There isn't one answer to how to develop volunteer recruitment – London's size and complexity means that consideration needs to be given to a number of factors, including the location of a project and cultural perceptions of volunteering alongside questions for the hosting organisation of whether they have considered their outreach approach. Who should attend? This event is for voluntary and community sector groups and organisations in London who involve volunteers or are planning to involve volunteers, and want to ensure that their volunteering opportunities are accessed by as diverse range of Londoners as possible.
