Following the completion of a successful young people’s employment rights project in the summer, we have decided that we will  continue to expand our work with young people and we hope to have a greater impact in the youth sector. We are pleased to announce that ROTA has been awarded two new grants to pilot work with disadvantage BAMER young people.

Trauma – Mentoring Young People Funder: Awards for All

The aim of the project is to address key issues faced by vulnerable young people to enable them to make a successful transition to adulthood. ROTA will seek to address these issues by running a series of events centred around the engagement and mentoring of young people (aged 16-25) who are facing a high risk of adverse issues including: emotional trauma, mental health/anxiety/depression, school exclusion, and involvement in gangs and drugs.

Young Mobilised Funder: BBC Children in Need 

This project will positively empower BME young people in deprived London boroughs to influence education policy and practice. ROTA will train young people on their rights so that they can express themselves and engage more effectively in activities and matters that affect them and their education and training opportunities.

Best Practices Exchange Seminar

ROTA is holding a National Seminar for the exchange and transferability of good counter-narrative practices addressing hate speech, and to explore possibilities and opportunities of transferring them in other contexts.

The seminar will take place on Monday 10th December from 12pm – 4.30pm.

The event is part of ROTA’s work on online hate speech - REACT (Respect and Equality: Acting and Communicating Together), an EU funded joint partnership project looking at online hate speech in the UK, France, Spain, Germany and Italy.

These meetings are a great opportunity to meet others working on migrants’ rights issues in the capital. They are also a chance to make the most of opportunities to work together in London and to learn about new developments in the sector

We are current recruiting for volunteers to work on our exciting new projects to review the Equality Act 2010, Training Provision for Councillors in London Authorities, and Differentiated fees in Higher Education.

Review the Equality Act 2010 Training Provision for Councillors in London Authorities

This project investigates the scale and level of Equality training provision for elected Councillors in the London Boroughs. It will look at whether and where there are gaps in provision, with a view to supporting to councils, through a comprehensive Equality Training offer.

Differentiated fees in Higher Education

This project explores the effect that the proposed introduction of differentiated fees in Higher Education courses will have on students from UK BAME communities. It will include a comparative study of practice in countries outside the UK, interviews and case studies with university admissions tutors and with current and prospective students.

Five strong BME-led and focused organisations across the country have come together to tackle violence against women through launching a public awareness and fundraising campaign to spotlight the critical work that they do. One of the five organisations leading this campaign is, Latin American Women’s Rights Service.

The campaign recognises how BME women across the UK face additional hurdles when seeking help and protection against violence. It will last for the entire duration of the 16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women (25 November – 10 December). There is a crowdfunding target of £150,000 to be raised.
