E-Newsletter issue 83 - June 2025

Welcome to this month’s edition of the ROTA Newsletter.

We have kicked off year 2 of flagship ROTA Community Research Programme (RCRP), which focuses on Housing and Health. RCRP is rooted in principles of anti-racism, decolonial thinking and systems-change. We look forward to this years cohort developing impactful peer-research on issues such as maternal mental health, experiences of Londoners in asylum hotels; Black and Global Majority people with hidden disabilities; sickle cell patients - to name a few!

This is a critical time for healthcare and our NHS with various consultations, plans and legislative changes being proposed. It is of course important that race is on the agenda with all of this, therefore we are responding to consultations and engaging with stakeholders. This includes the recent NHS Confed Expo 2025 which I attended and made the case for racial equity across our healthcare system. We have also recently begun a new community research project which addresses racialised inequalities in food and nutrition.

Finally, the fight for racial justice in our housing system continues with our Brick by Brick project. We have been engaging with the wider sector, communities and politicians to push for race to be on the agenda.

As ever, we look forward to collaborating with you all.

Matthew Johnson, ROTA Chief Executive

The Renters’ Rights Bill continues its passage through Parliament. It is currently at the Report Stage in the House of Lords, with a date for the next sitting on July 1st, 2025.

Of the 96 organisations and individuals submitting written evidence to the Bill, only six specifically mentioned discrimination, race discrimination and/or disability discrimination. Like ROTA, these organisations are in favour of strengthening the measures against race discrimination: UNISON, London Councils, Hibiscus, Shelter, ACORN and the Renters Reform Coalition.

Brick by Brick: Reimagining Housing Justice

Reflections from Our First Advisory Group Meeting

On 23rd April 2025, our Brick by Brick Advisory Group came together for the first time, united by a simple but radical belief: housing is a human right, not an asset. We’re here to challenge racial discrimination in housing and to reimagine a system that truly serves Black and Global Majority communities.

Why We Gathered

We know the UK housing system wasn’t built for us. From data gaps that ........

ROTA was amongst the panellist at the NHS ConfedExpo 2025

Our CEO, Matthew Johnson was a panellist at the NHS ConfedExpo 2025 in Manchester, joining a panel on race equity in health and care.

“It was a great opportunity to talk about our mission not just to do research, but to radically transform how it’s done."

Matt spoke about our work through the Race On The Agenda - ROTA Community Research Partnership (RCRP), grounded in anti-racism, decolonial thinking, and systems change.

“It’s about engaging in 'the politics of whose voice matters' and to afford people who have been silenced with the voice, dignity and influence that they deserve." We’re excited to expand this work nationally and challenge the racialised knowledge hierarchies that shape systems, institutions, and lives.
