Issue 78: November 2023

Welcome to our latest newsletter for November 2023.

ROTA has been extremely busy since our last newsletter.

I am excited to announce the appointment of Michael Buraimoh as the new CEO of ROTA. Michael is a seasoned leader with a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to promoting racial equality. He has the vision and expertise to steer ROTA towards a new era of growth and impact. We are thrilled to have him on board and look forward to his leadership.

Some other highlights include: We secured funding from Propel London, co-published a report with Heriot-Watt University looking into the housing crisis for Black and Global Majority communities, and produced a research report on why do some students from Global Majority and Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities choose to withdraw from university.

We are currently recruiting for 2 exciting roles to work on our new Propel London project.

Ali Ahmed, Chair of ROTA’s Board of Directors.

ROTA’s education work

ROTA’s research on exclusions from school indicates that young people from Irish Traveller and Gypsy and Roma communities continue to be disproportionately affected.

This is substantiated by the latest data from the Department for Education (2022/23).

Persistent absences or self-exclusions among girls and young women from all backgrounds have risen, the reasons for which are not well understood.

ROTA is working with Agenda Alliance and Friends, Families and Travellers to investigate this more fully. We have recently contributed written evidence to the Department for Education on School Exclusions and have taken part in the November 2023 All Party Parliamentary Group on Alternative Provision.

Why do some students from Global Majority and Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities choose to withdraw from university?

Although preliminary findings from ROTA's Pilot Study cannot be said to be representative of the Higher Education sector as a whole, some concerning issues have emerged. Among many reasons why students choose to leave or consider leaving university, race discrimination appears to play a part.
