Issue 79: December 2024

Dear Members, Partners, and Supporters,

Welcome to the latest edition of the ROTA newsletter. As we approach the end of the year, I am proud to reflect on our collective achievements throughout 2024 and share updates on our ongoing initiatives. This newsletter highlights our work during 2024 and our continued commitment to addressing systemic racism and promoting equity and justice for Black and Global Majority (BGM) communities.

ROTA's Growth and Development

Despite challenges in securing adequate funding to deliver our strategic objectives, 2024 has been a year of significant growth for ROTA. We are thrilled to announce that we have secured project and core funding, enabling us to expand our team and extend our offer to our members.

We started the year with the appointment of Taranjit Chana (Training and Engagement Manager) and Dr. Kulvinder Nagre (Research Coordinator), who lead the RCRP. This initiative aims to advance race equity through community-based peer research, focusing this year on key policy issues in education and employment. The report launch is planned for January 2025. We also welcome back to the ROTA family Besa Hasaj, our Finance Manager.

We end the year welcoming a new Service Development Manager, Michaela Queensborough, who will lead our efforts in addressing housing inequalities faced by BGM communities through our Housing and Homelessness work.

New Board Members

In September 2024, we doubled our trustees with the addition of four new Board members who bring substantial experience to help us build a robust and effective organisation capable of driving meaningful change.

Acknowledgements

On behalf of the ROTA Board, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our members, funders, and partners, including the City Bridge Foundation and Oak Foundation, for their continued support and engagement. I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to our volunteers and staff members for their unwavering commitment and dedication to advancing our mission.

Looking Ahead

As we move into 2025, we are excited about the opportunities to deepen our impact and work collaboratively to address systemic racial injustices.

In 2025, we will publish our RCRP with a launch event at the end of January 202, and the appointment of a new CEO will be announced - watch this space, who will take our work forward. Together, we can continue to fight and advocate for a fairer and more equitable society for all.

Wishing you a joyful holiday season and a New Year filled with hope and progress.

Ali Ahmed, Chair of ROTA’s Board of Directors.

While we support key government priorities such as equitable economic growth, clean energy, public safety, and healthcare reform, we emphasise the need for targeted action to address longstanding racial disparities across these areas.

This includes protecting frontline services, addressing housing inequality, ensuring environmental justice, and promoting equitable reform in policing, education, and healthcare.

ROTA’s response to Renters Rights Bill

We, the Board and Staff of Race on the Agenda (ROTA) note that the Impact Assessment of the Renters’ Rights Bill addresses rental discrimination against tenants receiving benefits or having children. The Bill rightly seeks to make it unlawful for landlords to discriminate on these grounds.

However, it is crucial to emphasise that discrimination based on race remains a significant and well-documented issue within the rental housing sector in the UK.
