Between November 2011 and February 2013, ROTA delivered the Shaping the Future seminar series, which considered some of the main challenges facing London’s BAME children and young people and their families, following a difficult economic period and wide-spread policy reforms and public spending cuts.

500 people, included two regional events, five local events, five workshops with young people, two workshops with parents, and a two day training programme for representatives of children and young people’s community organisations. Participants represented London’s BAME communities and their organisations and a wide range of statutory organisations with responsibilities for children and young people’s services. Activities took place in Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Haringey, Islington, Southwark & Lambeth and Westminster.

We have now produced a draft discussion paper for those who participated and others with relevant interests, which is available at  This draft discussion paper summarises the key findings and recommendations from the seminar series. We would very much welcome your thoughts on it by 30th October 2013. Comments will be incorporated into the final report which will be available in November.

The seminar series was delivered in partnership with The National Resource Centre for Supplementary Education, Islington BME Forum, Hackney CVS, the Osmani Trust, Communities Empowerment Network, SE1 United, The Selby Trust and THCVS.

We are extremely grateful to all participants who offered their time and expertise.
