Through the generations: Tamil oral history project

Through the generations: Tamil oral history project is a one-year oral history project narrated and conducted by different generations of Tamils in London.

The project uses oral history, documentary film and social media to capture and communicate the stories of the Tamil-speaking people of the island of Sri Lanka, and their descendants, who migrated to London between 1958 – 2009.

Tamil oral history project exhibition dates extended

For those who were unable to make it to the Tamil oral history project exhibition at Hounslow Library, we are delighted to announce that the Tamil Community Centre will be hosting the project exhibition between 28 January and 8 February.

The exhibition will be open Monday through Friday from 10:00am to 3:00pm at the Tamil Community Centre, Hounslow. The exhibition will be closed on Wednesdays.

Tamil Community Centre/Tamil Oral History Project Refugee Week programme announced

In 1958 the Tamil oral history project’s (TOHP) first UK story began with an unlikely journey from Colombo to Notting Hill. In a twist of irony, riots in these two capital cities were the (dis)order of the day, bridging the experiences of minority ethnic communities across continents and oceans.

Tamil Community Centre women exchange stories of migration for International Women's Day

On 30 March, a Tamil Community Centre women's group hosted a story hour on women and migration to celebrate International Women's Day.

Women in the group came together to share their experiences of life in the UK and reflect on the circumstances for women in their country of origin. Filmed for the Through the generations: Tamil oral history project , the session will be made available in a series of film vignettes on Tamil migration to the UK.

The session has been made possible with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Oxfam and Race on the Agenda.
