Background and Origin
Up to the mid 1990s, only a small number of ethnic Albanians have lived in the UK. During the Second World War a wave of immigrants left Albania, with some coming to the UK as well as America, Australia and other countries. There are not many of this generation alive now, and their children and grandchildren are indistinguishable from the host population, except from their recognisable Albanian names. Later, there was a massive migration out of Albania at the time of the fall of communism in 1991, mainly to Greece, Italy, Germany and Switzerland. Immigration specifically to the UK dated mostly from the late nineties following the civil war in Albania and the emptying of the armories. Some 800 children died in 1997 and many more were injured, as a direct result of the widespread use of weapons by the general population, including the under 18s.
