ROTA's concerns on the EHRC's commissioning processes

ROTA was pleased to hear that the EHRC will be investing some considerable resources in trying to understand why a human rights culture has not been materialised in the UK. However, we were concerned with the way the research projects were commissioned. This is ROTA's letter to the EHRC which has not yet responded. For more information contact theo@rota.org.uk

HEAR and ROTA's response to CLGs draft Cohesion Guidance for Funders

Communities and Local Government's (CLG's) consultation on its draft Cohesion Guidance for Funders closed on 24 May 2008. The guidance aims to advice funders on 'practical ways in which local authorities could help to build strong communities by promoting cohesion and integration locally.'

HEAR and ROTA's response recommends CLG withdraws the guidance, which could potentially make inequality and tension worse, by undermining organisations, which play an important role in addressing these issues. It also highlights how national guidance is inappropriate for London, given how unique the city is in terms of its diversity and the nature of inequality and tension, where it exists. It recommends that CLG develop new solutions to tension, focusing on the links between it and inequality and disadvantage, in partnership with equality organisations and the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC).
