Pan Equalities and Human Rights
Race is one aspect of our identity. While race equality is the bedrock of the work ROTA does, it is important that we are aware of how other equality issues can impact, complicate and compound racism. Therefore, ROTA is committed to using our expertise on race to understand pan-equalities issues and feed into debates around age, gender, disability, sexual orientation and faith/belief discrimination, especially when they cut across race - for example services for BAME Women affected by Violence. Our work is enhanced by facilitating HEAR which works on human rights and issues affecting all equality strands and by working in partnership with other organisations with expertise in this area.
ROTA currently sits on policy boards, forums, networks and steering groups making sure that the needs, contribution and aspirations of third sector organisations and networks working with BAME communities are heard. We specifically feed into pan-equalities work by sitting on the Equality and Diversity Forum and the English Region's Equality Network, and working closely with the National Empowerment Partnership. ROTA has also developed specific pan-equalities research and policy work to raise the awareness of the BAME third sector of human rights and equalities issues.
Previously:
- ROTA has made one of its priorities the regional presence of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, especially in terms of its relationships with the third sector. ROTA has produced work specifically aimed at the Commission (insert hyperlink to EHRC page). We are developing our working relationship with the EHRC engaging with them on BAME issues and advising them on their strategic direction
- The Human Rights Dimensions of Social Cohesion Project: A research and policy project being delivered by ROTA, HEAR and Independent Academic Research Studies to investigate how legislation, case law, the Government, local authorities and the third sector have used human rights principles to promote social cohesion. Click HERE for the report.
- Single Equality Bill - ROTA has produced policy briefings, along with HEAR, on the impact of the Single Equality Bill and will be following the development of this legislation. See Policy briefings.
- ROTA fed into and participated in the Equalities Review, working in partnership with London Voluntary Services Council (LVSC). See Consultations.
