London's BAME Third Sector: Managing the Economic Downturn

At this event, MiNet will present the findings and recommendations from evidence-based research carried out by MiNet, which explored the impact the economic downturn is having, and the different methods London's BAME VCS have adopted to manage the changing environment.

The event will be an opportunity for funders, decisions makers, policy makers, BAME infrastructure organisations and mainstream infrastructure bodies to come together to hear and discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by the recession.   • Lisa Greensill, Communities and Third Sector Team Leader, Government Office for London, and
  • Ian Redding, Head of Grants, London Councils.
  • Dr Theo Gavrielides, Chief Executive, Race on the Agenda.
  • Ibukun Olashore, Director, Organisation of Blind African's and Caribbean's

MiNet can also confirm Sona Mahtani, Chief Executive of Selby Trust, Terrence Simmons, Project Manager of Croydon BME Forum, Jill Walsh, Senior Regional Manager of CapacityBuilders and Ann Blackmore, NCVO will facilitate discussion workshops at the event.

Workshop details:

Workshop A: Sona Mahtani, Chief Executive, Selby Trust, The BAME VCS - 'A Solution Oriented Sector'

Sona will deliver a workshop that will provide an insight into the opportunities offered by social enterprise for BAME communities during the economic downturn. The workshop will focus on different functioning models of delivery, innovation and adaptation by BAME organisations to the changing voluntary and community sector environment.

Workshop B: Terrence Simmons, Project Manager, Croydon BME Forum The South London Sub-region - 'BAME Representation, Advocacy and Support'

Terrence will deliver a workshop that will explore some of the key issues around BAME infrastructure in London, with a particularly emphasis on the south London sub-region BAME infrastructure model. Terrence will provide insight into the structured programme currently being carried out by Croydon BME Forum locally and sub-regionally to increase representation, independence and support for BAME organisations and communities, and engage discussion around the current situation locally and sub-regionally across London.

Workshop D: Ann Blackmore, Campaigns and Communications, NCVO Mainstream Organisations - 'Supporting specialist BAME and other equality Organisations'

Ann's workshop will detail some of the findings from the research already undertaken by NCVO around issues of the recession and its impact on the voluntary and community sector. The workshop will also allow an opportunity to explore various methods NCVO can adopt to engage with the BAME sector and other equality organisations, with particular relevance to the recession and political participation.

MiNet also works in partnership with LVSC, MODA and School for Social Entrepreneurs, to provide a range of free specialised courses for Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and Refugee individuals. There are a range of courses options to choose from, which include taster sessions, entry level training and a mixture of longer programmes aimed at developing professional and personal skills. These courses are available to London’s voluntary and community sector groups funded by LDA Opportunities Fund Round 2, and is run by London Voluntary Service Council.

MiNet is engaged in a number of issues relating to regional policy development and the BAME third sector. We are working with others in ROTA, HEAR and externally on cohesion and 'single group funding'. We have been engaged in promoting BAME third sector engagement in Every Child Matters with the publication of recommendations in our our report and service commissioning (conference report).

MiNet regularly forwards BAME related policy information from ROTA and other organisations on to its members; is involved in engaging members in policy consultations; represents the BAME sector at policy boards as seen in the ROTA table and enables members to become representatives on groups such as the Mayor of London's Heritage Diversity Task Force Sub-groups.

The network is considering developing further work around the Compact between government and the third sector and health.
